I realized that it was tagged already this year... I'm playing too many tag games. I also thought that perhaps the temptation might be too great and you might try to slip in your file photo as the tag...

Re: Need a reason to ride? Lets play....

OK, no more of this eastside crap! I had to ride somewhere east of East Podunk on unremarkable roads to an unremarkable country burg to grab an unremarkable photo of an unremarkable pay fishing lake?!? Plus, I'm in the middle nowhere but for the 25,000 mini-van drivers on two lane roads clotted with traffic. WHY??? No more, please!!!

This isn't the tag, but it's close (there may be a hint here somewhere):

This isn't the tag either, but getting warmer:

And the new tag, somewhat closer to town....here ya go:

...with a few other pics:

One for the history buffs:
Built on a site selected by General Philip H. Sheridan in 1887 as a replacement for Newport Barracks (2). The fort was situated on a bluff above the Ohio River about three miles from the town of Newport, Kentucky. First garrisoned 15 Aug 1890 by two companies of the 6th U.S. Infantry and first commanded by Col. Melville Cochran.

One of the early structures built on the new post was a 102 foot Kentucky limestone water tower. Within the tower is a 100,000 gallon standpipe that stores water and supplies water pressure for the post. The tower was a fortress like structure built in 1890 at a cost of $10,995. The tower has been embellished over the years with plaques and a set of cannons commemorating various war heros, battles and wars.

Other permanent structures on the post included two sets of officer housing (Greene Street and Alexander Circle) , a large brick barracks building, NCO quarters, a brick mess hall and a large brick armory building. Temporary housing and barracks supplemented the permanent structures during the World War I and World War II expansions.

Fort Thomas first served as a replacement for Newport Barracks (2) and over the years it served as a replacement depot, induction center and military hospital before closing in 1946.

Re: Need a reason to ride? Lets play....

FYI, this park is also home to one of the more challenging MTB trails in the region. Steep, off-camber, technical, and muddy when wet. Don't try to ride this area right after a rain!!!

This is the armory they talk about in the sign above. The night of the fire I volunteered and carried bodies up the back steps when they were brought in on army trucks. Did that until 10 the next morning.

Dave: Were you VFD at the time? EMT or paramedic? Sounds like something that would leave a lasting impression....not in any way pleasant.

Nope it was the day after my 18th birthday, most officials knew me as my dad was on the aux police department. I was willing to work and they needed help badly. I saw all kinds of things that night and the next 3 days that left a impression, and certain smells can invoke flash backs.

Next Tag - Kornylak

This is the location of my first co-op experience. I made enough money here in 1987 to buy my very first motorcycle:

The purchase of this motorcycle also resulted in me getting kicked out of my parents home...

Dang. I used to live right next to that place (and it wasn't a very nice neighborhood back then!). No time to go get it.

Kornylak Corporation
400 Heaton Street
Hamilton, Ohio 45011

Even though I knew exactly where this was, it was actually a bit sketchy to snag today. Heavy lunchtime traffic, train going by at the time causing the traffic to get bunched up on this street, Kornylak employees standing outside and taking notice, local Hamilton PO cruising around the corner, and it was just plain hairy. I never would have anticipated this one to be a challenge. Thanks for the unexpected thrill. Haha!

Re: Need a reason to ride? Lets play....

I'm gonna stick with the urban challenge and go with this little woodshop art piece in the main part of Hamilton.
