A Rainy Thursday Afternoon

Ok, so after my morning of Mr. Mom duties and after my 3yr/old and I finished up lunch, I happened to catch the weather forecast on TV. They said today's high would be 51F-degrees and rain later in the day. The next day would be 40F at best, and the next SEVERAL days following where back down into the 30's as a high. This got the gears turning in my head and I realized today was it. It was probably the last opportunity for me to get out on two wheels for a while. At least during the day with a mini me.

So, I bundled him up in his "Snow Gear" and borrowed his sister's modular helmet (flip-face). This was a LONG process. Normal street clothes, ski pants, fleece hoody, Winter jacket, lined boots, over-sized mittens (his sister's, because I couldn't find his), and the helmet. Did I mention this was a long process? Oh, it was.

Of course, AFTER he is dressed, he tells me that he has to use the potty. This is no easy task. So EVERYTHING has to come off, then we have to start all over again. The second time around was not as difficult, but still time consuming.

After firing the bike up, throwing on some gear myself, working out a few minor bugs and operational safety procedures, we're on our way. I'm playing a "Scavenger Hunt" game with some of my Dayton area Triumph friends. You score points for photos taken in front of key locations. Our first stop.... a theme park of some sort. We stopped at Stricker's Grove just outside of Ross, Ohio.

As we started to leave Stricker's, it began to rain. I asked him if he was ready to go home. He said "No! Keep Riding!". So we did. Our next planned destination, a covered bridge. However, along the way we stopped for a quick photo in front of the Morgan Township Fire Dept.

It's still raining. I'm cold. He's not. I ask him again, "You ready to go home?" to which he replies, "No!". So we continue on to the Covered Bridge in Bebb Park, just shy of the Indiana border.

It's cold, still raining, and I'm freezing my ass off. I ask again if he is ready to go home. Of course he isn't, but I am! So we make our way back in the general direction of home. Along the way however, I take a slight detour and swing by the Reily Township Fire Dept for another photo.

I'm tired. He's tired. I'm cold. He's not. Back on the road, not far to go now. Maybe 10 more miles. He puts his head down, and he's out like a light. He snoozed the rest of the way home.

Ride time moves right on into nap time. Just doesn't get any better than that. I'm pretty sure the max temps we saw were no more than 45F-degrees.

Did you have your son riding in front of you on the tank the whole time, or behind you?

Re: A Rainy Thursday Afternoon

I can't see my space pictures here at work but I bet it was a great time

The bottom picture was a long time ago. He's now 18 and rides his own bike. That was when we were getting ready to take off for a weekend to Wapakoneta to see the Neil Armstrong Air & Space Museum.
The next year we did a trip to Fort Knox and the Patton Museum of Cavalry and Armor.
Man those are some great times.

This is a case where I'm not practicing what I preach. I usually advise other parents to place their kids on the back. I think that it is typically the safest place to be (well, other than NOT on the motorcycle). That's where my other two kids started, on the back. However, I've placed him in front of me. Sorta between the tank and my lap. The rear seat on the Trophy is not an ideal location for smaller kids. Additionally, his ski pants are kinda slick. Placing him in front of me, allows me to lock him into place between my knees and inside my arms while still keeping control of the bike. He also likes to hang on to the handlebars, a familiarity he has with riding ATVs with me.
