Post 2000 Triumph Adventurer 900

This bike is pretty much just like the Thunderbird or Legend, but has the Softtail type rear fender. 885cc triple. 13,313 miles.

It starts, it runs, but it doesn't run right.

I bought this bike less than a month ago, with the intent to add it to my collection, rebuild the carbs, get it running right, and probably do some minor cafe and/or TBS mods to it (like lower bars, cafe fairing, bar end mirrors, etc). I rode it down my street and back a couple times, then parked it on my bike lift in my basement workshop.

Before I could really dig in and start working on it though, an idiot driver pulled out in front of me a couple weeks ago, resulting in a really bad crash that destroyed my Triumph Tiger and left me with some fairly serious injuries. The Adventurer has regretfully sat neglected in my workshop since. It will likely take me a few weeks before I can really start using my hands in a mechanical nature again, and at least a few weeks, if not months depending upon possible impending surgeries, before I'm back to riding "Big" bikes again. To let this bike continue to be neglected would be a sin, and it really makes more sense for me to lighten the load right now and worry more about healing up.

I believe the carbs need to be rebuilt. Cylinder No.2 seems to be running really lean (not getting enough fuel, clogged needle?), Cylinder No.3 seems to be running too rich (dumping raw fuel into the exhaust), and I have a sneaky suspicion that one or more of the coils MIGHT have issues as stock coils from the late-90's and early-2000's are notoriously flaky.

Original owner parked it at about 13,100 miles and let it sit. Second owner rode it about 200 miles, dropped it at a stop sign, rode it home and then let it sit. I bought it, replaced a turn signal lens, cleaned it up, but that's as far as I've got.

$1700. That's about half of what these are normally priced at. Rebuild the carbs, have a spectacular Triumph Classic, or double your money.

Would consider trades. Lightweight small displacement bikes that my daughter can ride, like a Ninja 250, Ninja 500, CBR250, Super Sherpa 250, TW200, or might even consider an automatic motorcycle if it gets me back on the road sooner.

Interested or have questions, need more info or photos, send me an email at witttom@yahoo.com and we'll talk.

My buyer saw this bike in person last week. Check it over closely. Loved it. Assured me he wanted it but didn't get paid till the 31st. The 31st has come and went. He backed out this morning. Still for sale.

Of course, you get to keep the $500 cash deposit he put down to hold the bike, right?

Right?

Or were you just being a "nice guy"?

And when did this personality change occur?

Are you sure the accident hasn't affected your judgement?

Have you had an MRI of your brain lately?

Personally, I think the bike is gorgeous. I love the classic looks of the bike...except for the tail piece, which reminds me WAY TOO MUCH of a cheap, crappy looking Honda Rebel from the 80s.

Yes, I was being a nice guy, and yes my accident has most certainly affected my brain. I KNEW I should have gotten a deposit, but I also know that he was waiting for payday and probably didn't have a dime to his name. He looked at it in person. Seemed to be a respectable dude. He was absolutely positively certain that he wanted it. His excuse now is because he was just offered a job outside the country and will be moving in 3 weeks. I believe that he is probably telling me the truth, but it still sucks for me. Had it not been for that, I'm fairly certain he'd still be buying it.

I will now be pursuing two trade deals I was working on two weeks ago, but am doing so cautiously because I'm not sure if either deal is exactly what I want or if I'm willing to give up in this bike to obtain either of them. I'd obviously rather have the cash, so I'm not moving too fast.

I think its a gorgeous bike as well. I commonly refer to the rear fender as "Softtail-style". Other than the rear fender, this bike is essentially the same as the Legend and the Thunderbird. It is common for those folks to remove the rear fender without chopping the frame and install a cafe seat or small bobber tail light. The same could be done with this one. I was simply going to leave it as it is, swap in some shorter handlebars with bar-end mirrors, and add a cafe fairing, and be done with it. That would be very easy, change the entire look, and wouldn't cost much.
